Thriller

November 30th 2012 was the 30th anniversary of the release of arguably the best pop album ever! "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. The record has sold millions of copies worldwide and includes brilliant hits like "Beat it" or "Billie Jean". However, if everybody remembers that album today is because Michael Jackson made a series of movie-like videos that marked the beginning of new era in the history of videoclips. We enjoyed the songs very much, but we adored the videos!! The best one is, as everybody knows, "Thriller". It is impossible to describe how good it is. Just sit back and enjoy it!

Before Christ (-) and Anno Domini (+)

Emperor Augustus was born on the 23rd of September in 63 B.C. (this means Before Christ).

Thus, his first birthday was on the 23rd of September in 62 B.C. ... (1 year
after)

... his 10th birthday was on the 23rd of September in 53 B.C. ... (10 years
after)

... his 60th birthday was on the 23rd of September in 3 B.C. ... (60 years
after)

... so his 70th birthday was on the 23rd of September in 7 A.D. (this is Anno Domini) ...

... and he died on the 19th of August in 14 A.D. while he was still... ¿75?

(you can read it on the wikipedia english article about him)

His age at death should have been 76 instead of 75, shouldn't it?

... There is something here that does not fit with dates. What is wrong with the reasoning above?

The secret message of the Scribe.

A sculpture of a sitting scribe.

As you know, the ancient egiptians used a special writting, the hieroglyphics. For them, they were sacred, symbols related with the gods. Only scribes and priests knew how to read and write them, so for the rest of the egiptians, the hieroglyphics were secret messages written in temples and tombs walls.

The scribes used a special paper to write in: the papyrusThe papyrus is a plant which grow on the Nile's  riversides.
A typical papyrus plant near the Nile.

There are so many that the egyptians used it, after cut the plant, extend and prepare the leaves with some natural products. Then they could writte over the papyrus sheet like this:
But... How can we know what the egyptians wanted to say? Thanks to the Rosetta Stone: This is a fragment of basaltic stone with the same text written three times in three different scripts: hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek. It's important because, using ancient greek as the basis, we are capable to use this fragment to understand the hieroglyphs of the Ancient Egyptians.

Activities:
Investigate:
Who discovered the Rosetta Stone and when?
Why did they put this name?
Who decoded the Rosetta Stone?
How  long did it take to decode the Rosetta Stone?

You can find information HERE and HERE

A treasure had been hidden in your class, but you will find it only if you decoded this secret egyptian message:
To achieve it you can use this translator English- Egyptian. Good luck!

1. ¿Recuerdas el nombre griego del dios del amor?
2. ¿Y el romano?
3. ¿Son diferentes? ¿Por qué?
