THE CARNIVAL IN SPAIN

The origins of carnival date back to the ancient Egyptians 5,000 years ago.

The carnival lasts about 3 days when people dress up. In Spain the carnival is celebrated in many towns and cities, especially in the Canary Islands and Andalusia.

The most famous carnivals in Spain is of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife, considered the second most popular carnival and internationally known, after the carnival in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and another also important is the Carnival of Cádiz (Andalusia).

Ash Wednesday (Miercoles de Ceniza) is celebrated fourty-six days before 'Palm Sunday' (Domingo de Ramos), and this day 'Lent' (Cuaresma) begins.

  • Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Thousands of people go out to the streets every year for more than a week. It has two parts, the "official" carnival and carnival on the street. The official carnival with over 100 musical bands, and carnival on the street is participating with a costume. The wednesday prior to the weekend of carnival elects the 'Carnival Queen'.
  • All years and during the months of January and February is celebrated in the Gran Teatro Falla the 'Concurso de Agrupaciones de Carnaval'. In Cadiz, Carnival officially lasts eleven days, but if we combine these: the days of the contest, gastronomic events, etc.. totaling more than a month of carnival. The comparsas are the most famous of the carnivals of Cadiz, there is a competition of 'comparsas' that is celebrate in the 'Tetro Falla' and many people go to watch them.
